Shed is built

A much needed shed became a reality through several donations including a substantial one from a generous couple in Livingston County. The purpose and design of the shed were discussed by Todd Millspaugh, helper, Jeri, Ruthann and the major donors.  In the spring, the shed  was built by the talented students of the Construction Program taught by Todd Millspaugh at Howell High School. They worked diligently on some chilly days in May to complete the construction at the garden site.

Garden Progress

We added some new vegetables to the garden this year.  Successes: beets, tomatoes, green beans, green peppers, morning glories, zinnias, herbs, and gourds.  Unsuccessful: Cucumbers, Four o’clocks, pumpkins and squash. We planted many vegetables and flowers from seed and we received starter plants from Munsell Farms. Some lessons we learned  were the importance of thinning, diligent watering, mulching, and the impact of weather on our crops.

Special Activities

Three activities, enjoying a petting zoo, creating mosaic stepping stones and carving pumpkins, were held in partnership with the Special Ministries Organization on the grounds of the garden.  The participants, caregivers and staff socialized and enjoyed delicious dinners of hot dogs and walking tacos. New relationships were formed between participants and high school volunteers and old relationships were nurtured.
